Grandpas and Papas were once "binatilyos" (young guns) whose world was uniquely their own. Then a bunch of happy and carefree spirited young individuals who once roamed and ruled the streets of Maria Clara and beyond - a kingdom not their own but a playground where knights and dukes once trolled in search of the King's princess and bahalinas!

FOR SCORE AND MANY YEARS AGO...

We're back where we left off... as time stood still.

Families, friends - puppies and dogs included - have taken off in perpetuity. Now, we're not alone anymore - we never were - but bloodlines interchanged and crossed directions along the way. We've got families - wife and kids, and grands for some - proudly we say. Ours are simply stories to tell - or reminisce at most - music and foods to share, photos of both old and new. Time might have stood still... but it did pass away. Then, there is a sewing accessories shop called "Bids And Pises" - [translation: Beads and Pieces--or-- Bits and Pieces]

There are also many signs with either badly chosen or misspelled words but they are usually so entertaining that it would be a mistake to 'correct' them like....

17. In a restaurant in Baguio City, the 'summer capital' of the Philippines: "Wanted: Boy Waitress"
18. On a highway in Pampanga: "We Make Modern Antique Furniture"
19. On the window of a photography shop in Cabanatuan: "We Shoot You While You Wait!"
20. And on the glass front of a cafe in Panay Avenue in Manila: "Wanted: Waiter, Cashier, Washier".

Some of the notices can even give a wrong impression such as:

21. A shoe store in Pangasinan which has a sign saying: "We Sell Imported Robber Shoes" (these could be the 'sneakiest' sneakers);

22. A rental property sign in Jaro reads: "House For Rent, Fully Furnaced" (it must really be hot inside)!

23. Occasionally, one could come across signs that are truly unique - if not altogether odd. A city in southern Philippines which said: "Adults: 1 peso; Child: 50 centavos; Cadavers: fare subject to negotiation" .

24. European tourists may also be intrigued to discover two competing shops selling hopia (a Chinese pastry) called Holland Hopia and Poland Hopia - which are owned and operated by two local Chinese entrepreneurs, Mr. Ho and Mr. Po respectively - (believe it or not)!

25. Some folks also 'creatively' redesign English to be more efficient. The creative confusion between language and culture leads to more than just simple unintentional errors in syntax, but in the adoption of new words, says reader Robert Goodfellow who came across a sign... "House Fersallarend" (house for sale or rent). Why use five words when two will do?

26. According to Manila businessman, Tonyboy Ongsiako, there is so much wit in the Philippines because we are a country where a good sense of humor is needed to survive. We have a 24-hour comedy show here called the government and a huge reserve of comedians made up mostly of politicians and bad actors.

Now I ask you...where else in the world would one want to live?

Q & A Sa Wowowee

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8I4j2E0_MoY/S71zD2XBkjI/AAAAAAAAAEo/UgMg1hJR7qc/s400/Wowowee.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457644833411797554" /> Somebody sent me this over at the Internet and I just can't stop laughing...

1. Nothing much really. During Lapu-Lapu's time, Mactan was strictly tribal. Think small, gid. There were no big ideas such as nationalism or geopolitics.

Lapu-Lapu was simply, the local siga-siga and Magellan was the culture-shocked Westerner, a native first-timer in the exotic east. We lionize Lapu-Lapu as a hero and nationalist. Ang totoo, mayabang lang si Lapu-Lapu. But this defeat of a foreign invader, did not make a Filipino nation. The timing was wrong. And don't you believe that bull that Spanish explorers came to find spices of the East to improve the taste of their bland cuisine. Their hidden agenda was to spread their kingdom through colonization, the euphemism for land grabbing.

Hispanic Colonial Philippines

During the 333 years of Spanish rule (1565-1898), hundreds of rebellions were waged by native firebrands in many parts of the archipelago. Not one succeeded. Our rebels were either caught, garotted, or simply ignored by the Commandante as nuisances. Puro malas!

The execution of Rizal in 1896 was a traumatic experience for Filipinos. Those who read Rizal's Fili and Noli were incensed by the abuses of the church and state regime of the Spaniards. Emotions ran high, from Aparri to Jolo. The critical mass needed for nationhood was formed. At last we could rebel as a people, as anation.

The Katipunan did their battle heroics, originally led by the firebrand Bonifacio and later on by the crafty Aguinaldo. With more Katipunan charges (Sugod mga Kapatid), freedom seemed possible. Between 1897 and 1899, stealth, betrayal, and skullduggery bedeviled our prospect for independence. The Aguinaldo and Bonifacio factions engaged in an ugly infighting (the talangka mentality) resulting in the execution of Bonifacio.

Hispanic Colonial Philippines

Meantime, an American Admiral named Dewey entered Manila Bay and defeated a luckluster Spanish navy. Aguinaldo reneged on the pact of Biak na bato. He resumed the revolution by proclaiming the Philippine Independence in Kawit. June 12. From whom? We are still under the Americans & Spaniards at that time.

Meanwhile, American and Spanish soldiers held a "moromoro" battle in Intramuros with the Spaniards surrendering. Aguinaldo's republic and his KKK patriots were left out and ignored. Naisahan tayo... Minalas na naman.

The Filipino-American War broke out. Tall American soldiers looking like Clark Gable chased and battled the outlawed Filipino revolutionaries, ending in thecapture of Aguinaldo in Isabela. Thanks to the mercenaries from Macabebe. This is the second time those Macabebe turn in their own kind first with theSpaniards. This was the mother of all kamalasan..

At that time, our population was 8 million. The gap between the rich and the poor was estimated at 30% middle-class and rich, 70% low-class and rural poor.

During the Commonwealth period (1901-1941), which followed, there were lots of learning on democratic principles, its structure and governance. Technology transfers were done on Constitutional Rights, Public Education, Transportation, Health, International Trade and Industrialization. The Americans turned out to be good tutors. Filipinos also went crazy over American brand products like Libby's corned beef and Portola sardines, Hershey's Kisses and Wrigley's chewing gum, Camel cigarettes and Model T Ford for the hacienderos of Pampanga and Iloilo .

Hollywood films made Pinoy males fantasize on Jean Harlow, Betty Grable, and Mae West. Thus, Filipino colonial mentality began. We fondly called this period Peace Time. By the way, American troops massacred innocent people in Balangiga. Mga hayop din pala!

Japanese-Occupied Philippines

1941. Disaster! World War II! After attacking Pearl Harbor , the Japanese army invaded our country defeating the combined American and Filipino forces (USAFFE). General McArthur, the proud and handsome Army chief, fled to Australia at the height of the battle. Then the Filipinos march to Bataan as the prisoner in the Death March.

For four miserable years we suffered the sadism of the Japanese militarists rule. Torture, famine, and death were for us, the order of the day.. Kawawa. Malas na malas!

Post Word War II Philippines

The American forces returned in 1945 to liberate the country. McArthur, General superiority complex himself, sporting Ray Ban sunglassesd corncob pipe swaggered back to Manila . Piqued at his humiliation in 1941, McArthur ordered the bombing and shelling of Manila till kingdom come. So he can get back at Japs for wrecking his R&R place in Asia . Malas na naman.

The whole-wide expanse South of Pasig - from Post Office to Vito Cruz, including all of Intramuros - was pulverized. Manila was the most destroyed city of World War II next to Tokyo . Our culture, our heritage, and historical assets (seven beautiful churches in Intramuros, hundreds of elegant Art Deco and neo-classical architecture in Paco) were sacrificed recklessly and completely erased from the face of the earth. Sayang na sayang!

Philippines Run Like Hell By the Filipino Oligarchs

In 1946, we gained our Independence from the Americans. We were a free nation at last! A true Independence day for us, July 4th 1946 not the June 12th that Aguinaldo declared and Marcos celebrated. We had enough exposure and lessons on how to govern a democratic country, the first in Asia . Our population was 17 million. The dollar exchange was US$1 to P2.

But there was still no peace from 1947 to 1966. A widespread communist rebellion led by Taruc, the Lava brothers, and its armed guerillas called Hukbalahap (Supposed to be Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon) wage bloody war with government troops and turn out to be nothing but bandits
in disguise. Filipinos killed kapwa Filipinos. Malas na naman!

Our politicians and bureaucrats learned to engage in graft and corruption (What are we in power for?) - such as the war surplus bribery, the Tambobong wheeler-dealing and the Namarco scam. Talo nanaman!

Six presidents were elected to manage the country from 1947 to 1972, under the democratic system. They were Presidents Roxas, Quirino, Magsaysay, Garcia, Macapagal, and Marcos.

Economists looked back to the decades of the 50s and 60s as the best years of the Philippine economy, surpassing Asian countries. The nostalgia was naiveté, a useless ego-tripping. The gap between the rich and the poor remained big. 30% middle-class and rich, 70% low- class, rural and urban poor. We were 27 million people. US$1 was to P4.

Martial Law

During the late 60's, the Maoist communists led by Commander Dante intensified its drive to overthrow the government.. Marcos added fuel to the fire by creating a communist spook. Violence and mayhem rule the streets. The youth went up in arms! Martial Law was declared in 1972 and Marcos became dictator. Freedomof assembly and expression went out of the window..

What followed were years of dictatorial abuse, crony capitalism, shackled free enterprise, near economic collapse and a demoralized middle class. The gap between the rich (30%) and poor (70%) remained in a quagmire. Pareho rin pala ang situation.

Our population was 40 million. Exchange rate was US$1 to P7.. Kawawang kawawa! Malas na malas! In 1983, Ninoy Aquino, Marcos' exiled arch rival, was assassinated upon his return. Push came to shove. Cardinal Sin engaged on the people on to protest. Outrage, self- pity, shame and fury raged and rumbled like a tidal wave, culminating in the incredible People Power Revolution. The very sick and obstinate Marcos fled (hijacked by Americans from Clark) to Hawaii (sounds like Paoay) where he died. His alleged millions of stolen dollars intact and unresolved.. Up to now... Peso to dollar exchange is now US$1 to P20.

EDSA People Power and Incompetent Cory Aquino

But People Power was our shining glory! The whole world applauded our saintly courage, our dignified defiance, our bloodless solution to expel a dictator. We were the toast of all freedom-loving countries, the envy of all oppressed people. In 1986, we placed Cory Aquino, Ninoy's widow, in Malacañang. She was virtuous, sincere and full of good intentions for the country. But what happens under Cory?

An endless brown out and living in a portable generators is a must and monopolized by Cory's relatives who threw out her Energy Department down the Pasig River . The land reform she professed and promised was going good at first, but after she found out her Hacienda Luisita will be greatly affected, that program went down the Pasig River too!. No wonder that river is so polluted.

Coup attempts by Honasan, power struggle, political squabbles, and the infighting for juicy deals harassed the amateur Cory presidency. So nothing happened. No progress took place. The economy was still bad. The poor suffered more and more. Sure we got democracy back on its feet. But the Filipino resolve didn't happen. People Power pala was "ningas cogon" power.

Sayang na sayang! Tha gap between the rich and the poor remained at 30% (middle-class and rich), 70% (lower-class and rural/urban poor). Exchange rate was US$1 to P25. We were 55 million people.

FVR – A Brief Respite from Bad luck, till the Asian Bubble Hit

In 1992, Cory's choice, Fidel Ramos, West Pointer, soldier, and hero of the People Power won the presidency. He had the bearing, the single-mindedness and the vision to bring the country to a tiger economy status.. Ramos was a terrific salesman of the Philippines to the world. He was able to hype a climate of an economic ground. He removed barriers to progress. He was an apostle of privatization. His mantra was, less government, more private sector! Fidel hit the right note and the economy went on a roll. Fidel wanted to run for reelection but failed to swing the cha-cha (an idiotic acronym for Constitutional Change) so he could run again.

In 1997, the Asian economic crises struck, triggered by a balloon burst of the hyper-speculative Bangkok economy. The financial debacle created a disastrous effects in the investment institutions of Manila, Jakarta , Kuala Lumpur , Hong Kong, Seoul , and Taiwan . All the Ramos gains evaporated into thin air. Malas na naman! The poor, specially Mang Pandoy, were poorer than ever.

Erap – Hell yeah

1998 was showbiz time! The Erap para sa mahirap show opened to the chagrin of Makati Business Club.. Pasensya na po kayo, mga elitists. Democracy is also weird. The choice of the masa must be respected.

Catastrophe! Chavit Singson exploded jueteng bombs! For days on end, a nation sick in the stomach, sat through primetime TV aghast at watching the bizarre drama of alleged bribery, gambling, drunkenness, womanizing, deceit, and corruption. A lantern-jawed witness and a sexy intelligence "asset" hogged the witness stand.

Viewing the scandals on TV was like watching dogs mating in the public square. It's embarrassing but you can't take your eyes of them.

The impeachment trial serialized on TV was riveting. The defense lawyers, some wearing a canine sneer (ngiting aso) insulted our intelligence often. (Lokohin n'yo ang lelang n'yo). The whole country was stinking to high heavens.. The prosecution produced its own witnesses - Clarissa Ocampo, Emma Lim, Carmencita Itchon and many others.

Idols with feet of clay fell crashing into the dust. Those who voted against opening the enveloped were legalese, procedural, and sounding intellectually brilliant. Also heartless and thick-skinned. They couldn't fathom the heartbeat of the nation. Cardinal Sin, aging and sickly, called the people again.. It was People Power II!

Same humongous and collective umbrage, same brinkmanship, and same staccato prayers! Generals Reyes and Villanueva simply joined the mammoth EDSA crowd. No US jets from Clark this time. Erap was out! Gloria was in!

Gloria, Garci, Guns, Goons, Gold

Hope springs eternal. Malacañang regained its honor and dignity. Protocol was observed. Absurdity was gone. Grammatical English was back. Now the first gentleman should have been named Mr. Pakyao, he has the monopoly of the graft behind Gloria's back.

2001. More catastrophies! The peso plummeted to a horrifying US$1 to P51. The Abu Sayyaf (extremist ideologues? Or mindless barbarians) were into kidnapping and terrorism, gaining worldwide notoriety.. Businesses are still closing shop. Thousands of workers are being retrenched. Prices of food and gasoline are very high. (Galunggong is P80 per kilo!) Our streets became permanent garbage dumps. Maggots multiply to spread disease. Our communities stink.

Again, the whole nation was witnessing sickening crimes attributed to people in the government. Talo na naman! We are now 75 million people but the gap between the rich, 30% (middle-class and rich), 70% (lower-class and rural/urban poor) remains the same for one century.

When will this end? It's been more than 350 years since Lapu's- Lapu's victory, 100 years since Rizal martyrdom and we're nowhere as a people, as a nation. Malas pa rin!

Some wise guy said the Filipino is a damaged culture. Bully! And what do you call other foreigners. They used slaves in their plantations, and landgrabbed from the natives! What should we call such culture? Predatory Culture? Bully Culture? What about another country? How many countries did it put under the barrel of its gunships, so they could gloat that the sun never sets on their empire?" What shall we call this culture? Sahib culture? Gunga Din culture? C'mon, give us a break!

Damaged Culture or Plain Malas?

We Filipinos have strengths and endearing values. We are Christians, God-fearing, and peace-loving. We are patient and tolerant (matiisin to a fault). We are musical. We sing our blues away. We have a sense of humor. (We concoct and text Imelda hyperboles and Erap malapropism) . We learn fast because we are bilingual and highly educated.. We've got thousands of MBA's and PhD's in economics and management from AIM, WHARTON, HARVARD, UCLA, etc (most of them now overseas).

We've got a surplus of technocrats for nation-building. . We want to work if there are vacancies. We want to go into business if we have the capital. We want to obey the law if the law is being enforced.
We want to live and die here, if there is peace and order.

But, but, and but. We have many shortcomings. We are immature in our politics. Given a choice on whom to elect: a handsome pabling movie star or an honest and brilliant political scientist, we'll vote for the movie star.

No brainer tayo dito. Talo! We have many stupidities. Like dogs, we pee (Bawal umihi dito) on walls and tires. Our driving is suicidal. Our service quality is inferior.

Clerks at City Hall act arrogant. Sales ladies at department stores don't know their product features. No exchange No return even if it is defective, you have to argue for it. Tourists get mugged by thugs in uniform. Police lay traps so they can catch you and ask for bribe. What's wrong with us? We don't have a great leader. And good governance. (In Singapore , Lee Kwan Yu did it. The constituency profile is similar to Filipinos). Admittedly, this country is impossible, tiresome, and frustrating.

But it's the only country we've got. We live and die here.. Will we ever see the dawn?

Dios na mahabagin, Kailan pa kaya? Ubos na ang aming luha. Katog na ang aming mga tuhod. Tuyot na ang aming utak. Hingal na ang aming puso.
Dios na mahabagin, isalba Mo po kami. Hindi po kami talunan. At lalo pong hindi kami tanga. Sunod-sunod lang po ang malas.

NOTE:
Dati Kastila, Amerikano, Insik, Hapon at ngayon may Koreano pa.

Mahabagin Diyos, Nasaan Ka PINOY?"

Puppies Forever

WE call ourselves the Puppies. Or Seippups. Sort of my homeboyz. It started in 1976. Thirty something years now and still going strong. We were a group of kids - friends from everywhere - who decided to band together for reasons that's well beyond me now. Young kids - that's what we were I guess, kids looking for some identity, or trying to institutionalize and immortalize friendship that the Boholanos - or the Filipinos - are known for (if you haven't heard it before... then now you know!). It was about a future that wasn't carved yet in stone, sort of a foundation - about something - we care about and try to establish but wasn't so clear yet at this early stage of our young lives. We thought it was all about "We came, we saw, we conquer" type of thing - we lived lives as if it was - we had lots of fun, carefree lifestyle and head-ache-causing and probably (?) lots of sleepless nights for our loving and concerned parents. Let me make it clear, we were no bad kids... but we pushed friendship and all that goes with it to the limit. As one of our homies wrote in a song to immortalize our young past, he said, "Our lives were full of hopes and dreams but we didn't really care. The clouds of "non-existence" by then had wrapped our minds and wills." (Reminiscing, 1995)

PUPPIES 30 YEARS AFTER - REY T'S HOUSE BLESSING 2006

While I'm still waiting for more inspiration why don't you all finish looking at the slideshow and listen to a song written in 1995 about ourselves. Here's the lyrics...

(Words and music by J Roel Lungay)

It seems like only yesterday
When I wrote my very first song,
I still remember how I felt
When I struck that very first chord.

I fell in love with the melody
That I still hold today,
The words so full of memories
Of how life used to be.

We've walked through life so slowly
But we've wandered far and free.
We were different and so crazy,
No moments dull and gray.

Remember how we used to sing
And serenade the girls;
We drowned ourselves in booze and beers
Until the break of day.

Our lives were full of hopes and dreams
But we didn't really care;
The clouds of "non-existence"
By then had wrapped our minds and wills.

We've walked through life so slowly
But we've wandered far and free.
We were different and so crazy,
No moments dull and gray.

We traveled life so easy,
We've wandered fancy-free,
Outrageous and so silly,
So different from today...

Dazed & Confused

1. It's a collaboration founded on years of friendship, common life experience and shared interest but whose current musical quest and aspiration go beyond the limits and boundaries of some home-grown and culturally-embraced influences of the present time (pop culture), in pursuit of something new and unfamiliar, yet very special (we're going country!), in the hope of breaking new grounds (for future performing artists), creating fresh perspectives (for budding songwriters) and laying new platforms for many ipodcasters (modern music lovers) to enjoy, celebrate and tread on in the many years to come.

Who is Roro Music?

That's something for you to find out... get to work!!!

Please turn off the main player at the right hand column before playing this album package

And Where Am I?

<img style="display:block; It can also be ceremonial, competitive or erotic. Dance movements may be without significance in themselves, such as in ballet or European folk dance, or have a gestural vocabulary/symbolic system as in many Asian dances. Dance can embody or express ideas, emotions or tell a story.

Dancing has evolved many styles. Breakdancing and Krumping are related to the hip hop culture. African dance is interpretive. Ballet, Ballroom, Waltz, and Tango are classical styles of dance while Square and the Electric Slide are forms of step dances.

- Courtesy of Wikipedia

[NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU TURN OFF THE MUSIC PLAYER FIRST BEFORE YOU TURN ON THESE VIDEOS. She decided she would take her lunch, sit with the workers and talk with them. She put her sandwich in a brown bag and walked over to the spot where the men were eating.

She walked up to the group and with a big smile asked, "Do you men know Jesus Christ?"

They shook their heads and looked at each other. One of the workers looked up into the steelwork and yelled, "Anybody up there know Jesus Christ?"

One of the steelworkers asked why.

The worker yelled, "His wife is here with his lunch."

TYPICAL BOL-ANON NIGHT STORY: AT PROJECT CABAWAN

What God Looks Like

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. Tagbilaran is truly a city that never sleeps contrary to some blogs that claim otherwise.

A city as buzzling as this locale Tagbilaran perhaps is more suited to be tagged as a 'compact city' in a province full of life and activities in general, but not a Sleepless-in-Seattle distinction of urbis plotted in some movies, nor a reputation NYC has had since time immemorial.

Nightlife considered - but not highlighted - this proud city can claim a comparable accolade as a widely-stopped and extensively-explored destination, whose tourism effort is second-to-none (whether it's at par with international standard is of course another issue) relative to its neighboring islands or cities: eight flights a day to and from the capital city of Manila, a flotilla of fast and pre-modern crafts mooring at its dockside, an endless sight of the so-called pumpboats or outrigger canoes (and motorized ones, too) conveying island-hoppers from one to the other, the seemingly infinite cavalcade of tricyles (they're truly inventive!) that could give you the impression of them either as nuisances or works of art (or perhaps even the Christian church's way of spreading God's good news), the always-streamlined versions of the old thames and open-sided buses (which are long gone!) and sights of endless procession of people like those you find in truly mega-cities, that sometimes you're almost tempted to scream and shout, "what-in-the-world-has-happened-to-this-place!" An ultra-modern version of a pueblo transformed into a ciudad almost in overnight fashion! Heck! There's no such thing as quiet or people taking "siestas" anymore in this otherwise ghost town that it used to be. But what a super-lovable place this place is!

Ergo, with just these facts I can already re-claim the idiosycratic reputation of Tagbilaran as a non-sleeping city.

While the locale population has long been influenced by the so-called "night wingers" (my personal definition of "bat" people), most of Tagbilaran's citizenry, I should say, are still a well-disciplined lot not too different from those who came from the provincial towns. They are mostly hard-day workingpeople who for the most part don't waste their time and pockets going around window-shopping and all (again it's an altogether different story for those born in the X and Millenia epoch). Or perhaps because of the country's economic woes, again, since time immemorial, the majority still avoid this luxurious habit of munching around what with this extensive lists of "tourists" food or cuisines you see everywhere, and yet most people could hardly afford to do so. Or perhaps it's their no-nonsense approach to life the fact that there are other pressing needs or financial obligations that are first and foremost on their list. It's true, while life is worth celebrating, the list of activities and celebrations are simply piecemeal.

My second ergo, needless to say, is that most people still hit the bed quite earlier than what most young people tend to do on a nightly basis.

As to the young generation of era X and the Millenia, hitting the flat bed anywhere between midnight and jogging time at 4 A.M., needless to say is a far and strange thought to behold. It's a "cultural slang" that never seemed to have crossed their innocent minds. Kuno. Or perhaps they maybe just acting like adults asking the young but with a weird inexplicable look in their eye as if they've never been young or teen-agers once. Or is it that playful and youthful look too ignorant to fathom what some lie-ing-parents pretend to claim to have not gone through when they were their age? But, needless to say, these strange and vulnerable lots do really exist among us, much like the multitude that seem to scatter way deep into the night in mega cities like Hongkong, Manila or Bangkok. The so-called children of the night. Literally. These strange lots, however, are not the people I'm talking about... that make a city not sleep or what-have-you. After all, these people, too, will eventually will succumbed to deep lethargy after you give them a few hours to find their way home. (LoL)

Tagbilaran - a city that never sleeps is an altogether different story and conversation. Life has been good and God so generous; I feel God has blessed me so abundantly and filled my life with enough stories to tell my loved ones, my children and hopefully, one day, my children’s children. My life’s story is for you to read about and reflect on, peek at (check out ToYeM) and/or take a crack at with your imagination. On this page are few of those "blessed moments" I was opportuned to experience in some small and big ways! Hope you enjoy my BLOGster, kiddos!

+ + +

(6/15/07) - Ssssshhh… ayaw saba (Hush, stay quiet and be still)... I’m still here. haven’t been around much but not gone for good… I’ve been backtracking my thoughts for quite some time now but the "ageless and evergree-nish" cobwebs of my thinking caps are quite absurd-ed by, that’s it, "age and greenish" clouds of forgetfulness and aging. Watta Lyf, bwais!

+ + +

Last week was quite busy for an old brat like me with visits from longtime friends, Fr. Joseph Lim, a U.S.A.F. wing commander out of Texas AFB, who made a quick side trip home from almost a year tour of duty in Iraq before reporting to his next station, Germany! Msgr. Cesar Pagulayan, a.k.a., Derps, also took a few days respite from his parish responsibility in Pasig to join Joseph in Bohol. A reunion of sort for old buddies and friends from the good ol’ 80s in Manilandia.

+ + +

So here I was… back to my old dreaded-job of driving people around town, making sure they are comfortable and having fun as we explore sights and places of old Bohol. We made Jagna our first stop - or first protocol - saying hello to an old buddy, enjoying a sumptuous lunch treat and a-long-enough break for a few pops of Philip Morris. Then off we went, hitting the almost-forgotten scenic road that led to the crisp and beautiful coastline of Anda, Bohol - reminiscent of the good old days of the early 90’s which the last time I visited the place with my old buddies, Fro and Sammy - 'til our last stop of the day, the vintage Poblacion of Anda with its unassuming plaza in front of the old Church building, adorned by sand-filled coastline that looks more like a beach than a plaza itself, or, a park preferred to be strolled by lovers basking under sunlit breeze more than fishermen unloading their catches of the day and for some out-of-school children to bring home some of what may be left as giveaways.

+ + +

We visited another "old gun" in the ministry where both my "tourists" (guests) spent few chuckles with and history-filled chit-chats 'til it was time again to hit the road.

+ + +

(6/25/07) - I’m back. Whew! How time flies! Derps is gone and is probably in the U.S. right now; Fr. Josef, my old buddy, left two weeks ago, this time, reporting to his new station in West Germany… It’s late in the evening, a la Eric Clapton pensive mood; nights are low and all alone, a la Styx reflection: a real conducive time to write about something. Both wife and kid are probably in "dream mode" and I’m jockeying thoughts I once heard from Jose Mari Chan’s "No Rewind, No Replay." Those words can really make you cry: "It’s 2 a.m., we’re lying in bed. Stillness all around, there’s not a sound except in my head." So much for that ultra-sentimental tear-jerker. Makes you realize how old you have become, and lots of introspective moments sometimes make me age. Huhuhu! But I’m no cry baby. You bet!

+ + +

July 2007 is almost here. It was a long 2006, the last time I truly had fun with some old buddies of mine. "I shall return" were the last words I heard from them, one Douglas McArthur didn’t pen. Hehehe. I’m ecstatic. But waiting and anticipation are no fun either. The sundial doesn’t seem to tick as fast. Monsoon rains are on the horizon. Sea waters could be rough, during these times. Imagination doesn’t seem to pick up like it used to be, or when charged. Body’s aching (a la Alice Cooper this time) and "ageless frantics" are quite diminishing. Home and activities seem like a vicious cycle going nowhere. Summertime sun is making its presence felt. Pocket’s full of mumble (a la Simon & Garfunkel, one last time) and hindsight is not an option. I guess I’ll just have to sit a little longer…

+ + +

(July 12, 2007) - I arrived in Cebu yesterday by way of Tubigon to meet an old friend today at the airport. I spent the night with family friends and reminisced some old time goodies. Just talks, long ones, and a few teasers. But this old machine has to park in prep for this big day.

+ + +

My old buddy arrived very much on the dot. No delays I was told. From the US via Hongkong, his favorite lay-over city. Without much ado we proceeded back to the house for some more stories and funfare. We ate a late lunch and rested the rest of the afternoon. But not really. He rested; I and my other friends did not. It was time to fly - Mactan style! You bet we did. The rest was, again, a blur (hahaha!).
+

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lagkawbolanon.blogspot.com/2009/08/wattalyf.html' title='Bloody Old Blogger... The term seems to have a special ring in many of our psyches to finding its way to a reality that more or less gives an almost subtle description of what my life and relationships have turned into.

Truthfully, I have this special fondness - or maybe something more - and friendship with my little brothers who really have become friends of mine more than anything else. It's so special one wonders how things turned out or came to be when you looked around families you hardly even see siblings go out of their way to make such relationship works, much less become more than what it is. I consider myself lucky, but also surprised, when I give it (relationship) some thought... how my life and many of my personal activities revolve so much around these so-called BLOOD BROTHERS. Not family, but these once little ones, brothers of mine... who, even without any loud acknowledgment, are truly, truly, very special to me.

To be continued...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8I4j2E0_MoY/SpWIvpirF0I/AAAAAAAAADw/etOXY_Vf5ds/s200/BW_LokoyLungay.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374352082523068226" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 188px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8I4j2E0_MoY/SpWJHROyvfI/AAAAAAAAAD4/IEO3WlsvasA/s200/BW_GeneLungay.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374352488314093042" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 178px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8I4j2E0_MoY/SpWJRlYfsEI/AAAAAAAAAEA/LO03b5MvHIA/s200/BW_HermesLungay001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374352665522188354" /><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 188px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8I4j2E0_MoY/SpWJfAWNqJI/AAAAAAAAAEI/Kc7gp9tAxOU/s200/BW_BrydonLungay002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374352896098674834" />
Circa 70's Photos (Courtesy of AMC MemorabiLibrary)

Summer Of 2006

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8I4j2E0_MoY/SpVb2oYsDWI/AAAAAAAAADA/p7VpizwaXUg/s400/Toyem+013.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374302724448587106" />Toyem with his batman cape readies to let the blues fly

KALUPARON BLUES

It was a moment unforgettable… a time that stood still… smile galore, a moment joyful! Not only did we grow up and play together as kids, but we've been best of friends since I can remember: being in the same seminary at one time, playing music together, joined the same fraternity of friends and many other stuff too many to mention. But this I can say, in the field of creative arts, there's no question both of us share an almost twin passion (new word? LoL) for such that we spent many a-countless sleepless nights re-living the past and present, and dreaming of a future that may never be... yet gives the both of us the joy and pleasure only true company of friends and true artists come to realize, at times, in this elusively fascinating life.

Father J. Roel Lungay, a.k.a. Fro, is a priest-songwriter of thirty years from Bohol, Philippines and is currently the pastor of St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Slidell, Louisiana.

As singer-performer Fro often plays for small-group type of venues or gathering as part of his music ministry. As a songwriter, he writes all types of genre from religious to popular, rock to little country. Since 1992 Father Roel has recorded and self-produced a number of albums:

Mass of St. Rita (Liturgical, 1993)
Dear Jesus (Religious, 1994)
Fro's Music Revisited, Vols. 1 & 2 (Country, 1995)
One Heart, One Mind (Ballads, 1996
Christian Arts Songs, Vols. 1, 2 & 3 (Children, 1996-1998)

In 2005, right after Katrina, he collaborated with an old friend, Austrian-based producer and guitarist, Jimmy Cempron, and penned a soul-moving tribute to New Orleans that was just devastated by Hurricane Katrina , "Livin' It Up."

This year 2009, after a long hiatus, he revives his writing skills by co-writing again with another old friend and popular Boholano guitarist-turned-keyboardist, Romeo Mascariñas, also otherwise known as Romeo! Romeo! and both are bent of treading the country music highway with their mostly upbeat dance-oriented rocking tunes and a flair of the old stuff - pop and jazz influence of the 80's.

Watch out for their up-coming CD release called the BIG BANG! which will soon hit the airwaves.

To sample some of Fro's current works, please click any of the title below:

SONG TO THE FATHER
(Barbara Henry - J.
